Music
St Michael’s is fortunate to have a Director of Music who is a very competent organist and pianist and experienced in arranging music for weddings. If required he can also arrange soloists or choirs and instrumentalists. How much music is normally used in the Service? Usually the music in a marriage service consists of:
Music at ‘The entrance of the bride’ (A Processional) 2 or 3 Hymns (St Michael’s uses the New English Hymnal) Music as the bride and groom leave the church (A Recessional). Signing of the church register (this does not apply to Services of Prayer and Dedication)* *At this point you might like to have a soprano solo, or a harpist or other instrumentalist. Perhaps you would just like an organ piece.
Can we leave it up to the organist to play appropriate music during our service? It is preferable that you both choose the hymns (if you want to have any at all) and the Processional and Recessional music in consultation with our competent and experienced organist. All other music you can leave to him – if you so desire. If the groom has any special favourites he would like to hear whilst waiting for his bride to arrive at the church, our organist will try to accommodate his request. Can you suggest a website we can hear various suggestions for wedding music and hymns? Yes. Google "wedding music consultant" and click on the first of the list. This is a great site to explore for all aspects of your wedding. (It is deep inside www.members.ozemail.com.au) Do we need a Wedding Organiser to arrange music or to book soloists? No. Our Director of Music will be able to suggest top quality soloists or instrumentalists you may require and be able to book them. He has many contacts and can help and advise you on all your musical decisions. St Michael’s does not have a choir but there are a few good amateur choirs locally that can be called on (subject to availability). This may cost 1500 euros or more. Can we bring along a friend to sing or play for us? Yes, by all means. (If an accompaniment is required please consult our Director of Music well in advance.) Does St Michael's have a choir? No - but there are a few good amateur choirs locally that may be booked - subject to availability (see costs). Can we use recorded music in our service? Yes but you should discuss first with the Chaplain. Please note that you cannot use recorded music for any hymns. Do we have to have any music in our service at all? No. Most couples want some music, but this is not obligatory. Details of the Director of Music are to be found on the Contacts page
